Mental Health First Aid Training

Equipping you with the skills to recognise, support, and guide individuals experiencing mental health difficulties.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training programme that teaches people how to recognise the signs that someone may be experiencing poor mental health, offer initial support, and guide them towards appropriate professional help and other sources of support.

Much like physical first aid, MHFA equips people with the skills and confidence to step in early, start a supportive conversation, and respond calmly and appropriately when mental health is affected.
This training plays an important role in fostering supportive environments and promoting mental health awareness, both in the workplace and in everyday life.

I am an accredited MHFA England Instructor Member, approved to deliver MHFA England courses in line with national standards.

What MHFA focuses on

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA®) is an evidence-based training programme developed by MHFA England, the national authority on mental health first aid.

MHFA focuses on helping people feel more confident and capable when mental health is affected. It provides practical guidance on recognising early signs, starting supportive and non-judgemental conversations, and understanding how and when to encourage further support.

It plays an important role in early support and awareness, sitting alongside professional mental health services and wider wellbeing approaches.

What people gain from MHFA training

People who complete MHFA training become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®).

MHFAiders learn how to:

  • Recognise early signs of poor mental health

  • Start supportive conversations with confidence and care

  • Listen with empathy while maintaining appropriate boundaries

  • Encourage people to access the right support

  • Look after their own wellbeing while supporting others

MHFA training is grounded in research and has been developed with input from people with lived experience, clinical practitioners, learners, and workplaces.

Support beyond the course

MHFA training does not stop when the course ends.

MHFAiders receive:

  • Three years’ membership of the Association of Mental Health First Aiders

  • Access to the MHFAider Support App®

  • Ongoing learning, resources, and community support

This continued support helps MHFAiders feel confident, supported, and clear in their role over time.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Mental Health First Aid training:

  • Is not therapy or counselling

  • Does not replace professional mental health support

  • Focuses on awareness, early support, and signposting

  • MHFA plays an important role as part of a wider approach to mental health within organisations and communities.
